Treatment or empiric therapy

Infants less than 1 month corrected age (ceftriaxone may cause bilirubin encephalopathy)

Patients with liver/gallbladder/biliary disease, including perioperative prophylaxis in liver transplantation (ceftriaxone may cause biliary sludging)

Restricted Prophylaxis Indications

Peri-operatively in liver transplantation

Prophylaxis against Neisseria meningitidis where rifampin and ceftriaxone are contraindicated

Other Indications

Infectious Diseases approval required

Ceftriaxone is the preferred 3rd generation cephalosporin due to ease of administration, cost
