Prevention of emerging resistant organisms
  • Meningitis or encephalitis

  • Brain abscess

  • VP shunt infection

  • Neurosurgical patients with subdural grids

  • Sepsis in infants >1 month of age

  • Sickle cell disease patients presenting with Fever (rule out infection) in the Emergency Dept.

  • Acute osteomyelitis in sickle cell disease patients

  • Severe or complicated community acquired bacterial pneumonia

  • Perforated appendicitis

  • Moderate to severe aspiration pneumonia

  • Gonorrhea, pelvic inflammatory disease

  • Orbital cellulitis

  • Lyme disease

  • Typhoid fever

Restricted Prophylaxis Indications

Neisseria meningitidis where rifampin is contraindicated
