Klebsiella oxytoca

General Information

Fermenting gram negative rod, of the Enterobacteriaceae family.

Normal GI flora.

  • UTI

  • Can cause nosocomial infections similar to Klebsiella pneumoniae.

  • There is evidence that this organism may cause colitis associated with antimicrobial use.

Precautions:

  • Routine practices if not ESBL or CRE/ CPE (carbapenem resistant).

Precautions for history of or suspected or confirmed ESBL:

  1. Contact isolation precautions in addition to routine practices. (Yellow isolation sign)
  2. For patients with history with ESBL, ARO swabs are required on admission.
  3. Gown, and gloves for all room/space entry and patient contact.
  4. Dedicated patient care equipment. If unable to dedicate, ensure shared equipment is cleaned with appropriate disinfectant following use. Provide dedicated toileting facilities.
  5. Notify receiving department of isolation status should patient require test/procedure off unit and if for transfer to other health care facility.
  6. Patient DOES NOT require gown/gloves when out of room. Patient must clean hands prior to leaving and upon return to room. Patient must wear a surgical mask during pandemic. Family/visitors DO NOT require gown/gloves when in room unless assisting with personal care to patient.
  7. Routine housekeeping as per protocol. Isolation clean at discharge.
  8. Patient will require 3 sets of negative follow up screens, obtained at least one week apart, prior to reassess of isolation status. IPAC will arrange follow up when appropriate.
