General Information

Azithromycin for urinary tract or genital infections.

Erythromycin for neonates with respiratory infections.

Ureaplasma urealyticum is a bacterium belonging to the genus Ureaplasma and the family Mycoplasmataceae.

A common symptom associated with these infections is the "fishy" smell that is created due to the production of ammonia by the hydrolysis or urea.

U. urealyticum can cause urethritis and bacterial vaginosis, but has an unclear role in this as is found commonly as a part of normal flora.

The role of U. Urealyticum in preterm birth is also unclear and the data is highly variable.

Some associated neonatal outcomes include bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular hemorrhage and necrotizing enterocolitis.
