General Information

  • Prophylaxis/treatment of bite wounds

  • Polymicrobial infections of the respiratory tract or abdomen

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

Pregnancy: Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid may be associated with NEC in the newborn if given near delivery in the setting of PPROM

Breastfeeding: Compatible

For prolonged therapy monitor liver enzymes, CBC

  • Gastrointestinal side effects - diarrhea

  • Hepatotoxicity due to clavulanate - usually mild, liver failure is rare

  • Allergy/rash (immediate or delayed), cytopenias

    • Note EBV related rash

  • Contraindicated in patients with true penicillin allergies.

  • Amoxicillin shares a common structural side chain with cephalexin, therefore, there is an increased risk of allergy cross reactivity between this agents.
