Spectrum of Activity

General Information

Pregnancy: Compatible.

Breastfeeding: Compatible.

Treatment of syphilis (excluding neurosyphilis).

Do not inject near an artery or a nerve; permanent neurological damage or gangrene may result. When doses are repeated, rotate the injection site. Do not administer IV, intra-arterially, or SubQ.

Allergic reaction

No significant drug interactions.

Long acting benzathine penicillin G is the appropriate treatment for syphilis. It achieves detectable serum levels of penicillin for 2 - 4 weeks and is required to adequately treat infectious syphilis. Short acting penicillin G does not provide adequate treatment for syphilis (except neurosyphilis).

Pregnant individuals with syphilis with a penicillin allergy should undergo desensitization.
