Bacterial Gastroenteritis

Most Likely Pathogens

Salmonella spp.

Plesiomonas shigelloides

Aeromonas hydrophila

Empiric Therapy

Antibiotic treatment not routinely required

If severe, then treat according to susceptibilities of organism isolated

Supportive Therapy

Hydration status of the patient should be assessed carefully.

For young children, frequent, small amounts of water take orally are encouraged.

For patients with more serious hydration deficit, intravenous fluids may be required.
