Spectrum of Activity

General Information

Treatment of sensitive MSSA and CoNS infections

  • Capsule: 250mg, 500mg
  • Oral liquid: 25 mg/mL
  • Injection: 250mg, 500mg, 1g, 2g/vial

Neonatal (Cloxacillin Sodium):

  • IV, IM: 500mg vial for injection
  • PO: 125 mg/5 mL powder for oral suspension (bottle)

Oral cloxacillin is poorly absorbed (bioavailability ~50%, reduced by food). 

Consider using cephalexin as oral-stepdown in place of oral cloxacillin, as cephalexin has higher bioavailability, is more palatable and causes less GI upset.

Antimicrobial class: Antistaphylococcal penicillin

Average serum half life: Adults: 0.5-1.5 h (prolonged in renal impairment and in neonates)

Route of Elimination: Urine and feces
