Penicillin G Benzathine

General Information

Pediatric:

  • Injection: 1,200,000 IU/2 mL PLS

Neonatal:

  • IM: 1,200,000 units/2 mL pre-loaded syringe (PLS)
  • Do not inject into or near artery or nerve (may result in neurovascular and neurological damage)
  • Not a substitute for IV penicillin G; used in certain situations only; consult ID service
  • Warming to room temperature will lessen pain on injection
  • Provides sustained levels for 2-4 weeks
  • Therapeutic alternative in neonates who have normal physical examination, radiographic imaging, and laboratory analyses (includes infant RPR/VDRL titre ≤4 times maternal RPR/VDRL) but are at risk of infection from inadequate maternal therapy; used in certain situations only, consult ID service
    • RPR: rapid plasma reagin
    • VDRL: venereal disease research laboratory
