When to Suspect a Line Infection

Clinical Manifestation

Clinical manifestation varies depending on the type of line infection

  • Fever, chills, rigors
  • Extremes of age may not have fever
  • Exit site purulence
  • Localized pain/tenderness, induration, erythema over the line
  • Purulence at line site
  • If local abscess suspected investigate with ultrasound
  • May or may not have associated arm swelling
  • If suspected investigate with ultrasound
