Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

Background Information

Pneumonia that occurs more than 48 hrs after endotracheal intubation

Diagnosis is supported by clinical, radiographic, and microbiological data (rather than clinical criteria plus CPIS)

  • Collect blood cultures and respiratory culture (endotracheal aspirate), ideally BEFORE antimicrobials are started
  • Enterococcus and Candida are commonly isolated in respiratory cultures of hospitalized patients, but are generally considered colonizers
