Atypical Coverage

Atypical Bacteria comprise only a small proportion of patients admitted with CAP, therefore most patients do NOT require the addition of atypical coverage

The BioFire® FilmArray® Respiratory Panel screens for common atypical organisms such as Chlamydophila pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae

Legionella pneumophila causes a severe form of pneumonia with a relatively high mortality rate, known as legionellosis or Legionnaires' disease. Legionella coverage should primarliy be given in months of June to October in Ontario and during legionellosis outbreaks, or for those critically ill with pneumonia
