General Information

Nonfermenting aerobic gram negative bacillus

Ubiquitous, found in soil, water, and on plants and animals. Thrives in moist environments.

Easily selected for by the administration of non-antipseudomonal antimicrobials.

Common in hospital environment.

Not typically part of the human microbiome, but human colonization can occur at moist sites, such as perineum, axilla, and ear. Positive wound cultures most often represent colonization.

May be a colonizer of diseased airways, wounds, and other sites

Important pathogen of generally nosocomial infections including:

  • UTI
  • Pneumonia - HAP/VAP
  • CNS
  • Intra-abdominal infections
  • Bacteremia
  • Vascular catheter infection
  • Burns/wound infection
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Others

May require contact +/- droplet precautions if highly resistant
