Susceptibilities

General Information

Streptococcus gallolyticus previously called streptococcus bovis:

  • Gram-positive cocci chains and pairs
  • Lance field group D
  • Often misidentified as enterococci or viridans strep
  • Important association between S. gallolyticus endocarditis and colon malignancy (50%)
  • Colon cancer workup has to be performed on any patient with bacteremia/endocarditis

Most common

  • Bacteremia (25-50% are associated with endocarditis)
  • Infective endocarditis

Penicillin is drug of choice with S. gallolyticus
