Standard Precautions
Gram negative rod, of the Enterobacteriaceae family.
NOT an AmpC organism.
Produces class A cephalosporinase, a type of beta-lactamase.
GI flora
Most commonly UTI, but also causes other nosocomial infections.
Proteus vulgaris species is more resistant to antimicrobials than Proteus mirabilis.
P. mirabilis may produce AmpC beta-lactamases and cause inducible resistance while P. vulgaris may produce CumA beta-lactamases which hydrolyzes cephalosporins.
