Clostridioides difficile Infection (CDI)

Isolation

Contact Enteric Precautions

Note About Testing

The C. diff PCR cannot distinguish between active infection and asymptomatic carriage

The PCR detects the presence of toxigenic C. difficile organisms in the stool, NOT toxin production

Limit C. difficile testing to patients with a high probability of having active infection

If your patient received a laxative medication in the 24-48 hrs preceding the onset of diarrhea, and their symptoms of infection are mild, consider holding laxatives and waiting 24 hrs to re-evaluate clinical progression before ordering the PCR test

Inpatient: Refer to C. difficile order set 11035 to place orders

General Information

It should only be considered for non-severe disease when oral vancomycin and fidaxomicin are not available
