Carbapenems are the preferred therapy for any moderate-severe infection.
Beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations (i.e. Zosyn, Augmentin) should NOT be used for ESBL infections other than uncomplicated UTI, even when reported as susceptible.
Often resistant to fluoroquinolones, TMP-SMX, and aminoglycosides via other mechanisms.
For UTI only - may be susceptible to nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin.
