General Information

Gram negative rod (curved or helical)

Humans are major reservoir

Acquisition typically leads to persistent colonization

Most patients with persistent colonization are asymptomatic

Associated with:

  • Duodenal ulceration
  • Gastric ulceration
  • Chronic gastritis (risk for gastric carcinoma)
  • Gastric lymphoma

H.pylori colonization may contribute to protection against childhood asthma
