General Information

Anaerobic Gram negative bacillus

Most common anaerobic infection "below the diaphragm."

Colonizes GI tract of all humans, colon>small bowel.

  • Can be associated with polymicrobial or monomicrobial infections
  • Intra-abdominal abscess/sepsis
  • Perianal abscess
  • Tubo-ovarian abscess
  • Bacteremia
  • Skin and soft tissue infections (including necrotizing cellulitis/gangrene, diabetic wound infections)
  • Brain abscess

When isolated in blood consider intra-abdominal imaging to identify source
