Dosing

General Information

  • Skin and soft tissue infection (e.g. cellulitis).
  • Surgical prophylaxis.
  • Susceptible Staphylococcal, Streptococcal and gram negative infections.
  • Allergy (immediate or delayed).
  • Can cause positive Coombs, cytopenias, and hepatic and renal laboratory abnormalities.

Probenecid - prolonged half-life. Drug interaction has been used therapeutically to give once daily cefazolin.

Probenecid is available only for use in management of UNCOMPLICATED Skin and soft tissue infections for Community IV patients. Patients admitted to hospital while receiving cefazolin/probenecid as outpatients should be converted to cefazolin alone based on their renal function.

Probenecid has no place in the therapy of inpatients and requests for this indication will not be approved.

IV Administration: Dilute in 50-100 mL D5W or NS and administer over 30-60 min.

Staphylococcal isolates reported as cloxacillin-susceptible (i.e. MSSA) are also susceptible to cefazolin.
