General Information

Uncomplicated cystitis

  • Complicated UTI, bacteremia, pyelonephriris, urosepsis
  • The Beers Criteria recommends avoiding use in geriatric patients ≥65 years with a CrCl <30 mL/minute

Uncomplicated cystitis in females with normal renal function

  • Interstitial pneumonitis and fibrosis especially with prolonged use.
  • Peripheral neuropathy.

Antacids decrease absorption

For cystitis only. Do not use in bacteremia/pyelonephritis etc.

Most commonly used formulation is MACROBID 100 mg PO BID

If ordering NG, use nitrofurantoin tablets 50 mg QID
