General Information

Anaerobic gram negative bacilli.

Normal oral/gastrointestinal flora.

  • Oral/dental infections
  • Aspiration pneumonia, septic emboli
  • Empyema/lung abscess
  • Intra-abdominal abscess
  • Bacteremia
  • Head and neck infection (pharyngitis, peritonsillar abscess) including Lemierre Syndrome (often begins with a sore throat then proceeds after 4-5 days to septic jugular vein thrombophlebitis) associated with F. necrophorum typically
  • Diabetic foot infection
  • Liver abscess
  • Genital tract infections

Bacteremia with F. necrophorum should prompt thorough investigation for septic thrombophlebitis (Lemierre Syndrome).
