Dosing

General Information

Administration

  • IM: 4 mg/mL or 10 mg/mL concentration by deep IM injection
  • IV: 4 mg/mL or 10 mg/mL undiluted pushed over 1 minute or less. If not tolerated, can durther dilute and give IV infusion over 5-15 minutes
  • PO: give with meals to prevent GI upset. Can also give antacids between meals to prevent peptic ulcers

Preparation

  • If further dilution is needed, use NS or D5W

Compatibility

  • D5W or NS. Not tested in LR

Anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressant uses in variety of disease states

COVID-19 use for patients requiring supplemental oxygen and/or ventilation

  • Glucose
  • CBC
  • Occult blood loss
  • Blood pressure
  • Serum potassium

Minimal adverse effects with low-dose and short-term use

  • Hypertension
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Headache
  • Thromboembolism
  • Weight gain

Many drug interactions mostly enhancing adverse/toxic effects

  • Call pharmacy with interaction concerns

Mechanism of action: long-acting corticosteroid with minimal sodium-retaining potential

Average half-life: 1-5 hours

Safe in pregnancy
