General Information

PO only, administration of capsule formulation with food decreases absorption significantly but will help if GI side effects occur

Cefixime is often used in the treatment of Gonococcal infections in select populations given emerging resistance.

Also used for UTI (including pyelonephritis) and group A Streptococcal pharyngitis

  • Narrow spectrum, possible transition for discharge, IV to PO
  • Strategy: Total EBM duration set (inpatient and outpatient)
  • Renal function
  • With prolonged use, monitor hepatic function and CBC with differential periodically
  • Allergy/rash
  • Positive Coombs test
  • Cytopenias
  • Gastrointestinal intolerance
  • Elevated liver enzymes
  • Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea
