Tinea corporis

Microbiology

General

Tinea infection that does not include the feet, groin, face, scalp, or hair

Empiric Treatment

If at least 3 years old: Clotrimazole cream 1%

Clotrimazole cream 1% should be applied twice daily for 1 to 3 weeks

  • Available OTC
  • Topical azole therapy often effective and preferred first line

OR for Refractory or Extensive Disease

If at least 4 years old: Terbinafine granules

  • 10-<20 kg: 62.5 mg PO once daily for 1 week
  • 20-40 kg: 125 mg PO once daily for 1 week
  • >40 kg: 250 mg PO once daily for 1 week

OR

Additional Considerations

Fluconazole is a potent cytochrome P450 inhibitor resulting in many potential drug-drug interactions

Terbinafine granules may be sprinkled in non-acidic foods
