Toxic Shock Syndrome

Empiric Treatment

Max: 2,000 mg/dose

  • Covers S. pyogenes and MSSA

PLUS

Max: 600 mg/dose

  • Clindamycin is added specifically to help with decrease toxin production and has shown to decrease mortality

PLUS

  • Although the majority of S. aureus that cause toxic shock are not MRSA, it is still possible. Thus vancomycin should be continued ADDED to the above therapies until MRSA is ruled out.

Duration

Generally ~10 days

Clindamycin is usually not needed for the full duration, consider discontinuing once rash has resolved and patient clinically stable
