Mild respiratory infections when patient is allergic to penicillin/amoxicillin
Oral step down therapy from 3rd generation cephalosporins when not allergic to amoxicillin/penicillin. Cefdinir has poor oral absorption. Amoxicillin/clavulanate has better pneumococcal and H. influenzae coverage at high dose and is associated with better outcomes. This is why amoxicillin and/or amoxicillin/clavulanate are preferred in CAP, otitis, etc guidelines.
When combined with iron containing foods/formula can create a complex with the medication and result in red stools (from interacting with the iron) that are NOT bloody.
