Susceptibilities

General Information

  • Ceftriaxone
  • Amoxicillin-clavulanate
  • Ampicillin (if beta-lactamase negative)
  • Amoxicillin (if beta-lactamase negative)
  • Levofloxacin
  • Azithromycin

Small gram negative bacillus, encapsulated or not (non=non-typeable)

Normal respiratory flora

Invasive disease sharply declined after Hib conjugate vaccine widely used, especially in children <5yrs old

Most invasive disease is now caused by non-typeable strains

Droplet precautions if presentation is epiglottitis.

Invasive disease is notifiable - call Public Health.

Ampicillin and amoxicillin are alternative treatment choices if the organism is susceptible; 40% of nontypeable strains are ampicillin-resistant beta-lactamase producing strains.
