Clinical/Diagnostic Considerations

  • Viral etiology is more common with cough/ conjunctivitis/congestion.
  • Group A Streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis is characterized by fever, tender cervical lymphadenopathy, pharyngeal exudate, may have a scarletiniform rash (sandpaper-like feel) .
  • Culture of pharynx should be done to confirm diagnosis of GAS.
