General Information

Gram positive anaerobic cocci are part of the Peptostreptococceae.

Other common oral anaerobes include Veillonella, Parvimonas and Fusobacterium.

These are common colonizers in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract but can also be involved in various types of infections in the head and respiratory tract.

Can be seen in chronic sinus infections, brain abscesses, Lemierre's syndrome (Fusobacterium)

These are usually not reported because anaerobic cultures are only done on fluid or pus specimens that are sent specifically for anaerobic culture.
