Aerobic gram negative rod, encapsulated
Infected animal bite - normal flora of canines
Skin/soft tissue infection, Necrotizing Fasciitis, Bacteremia, Meningitis. More severe infections tend to occur in splenectomized patients, alcoholics, and immunosuppressed patients.
~1/3 patients with bacteremia will have a rash that can progress to purpura fulminans
