General Information

  • Culture, PCR
  • Histology can be strongly suggestive

Gram-positive coccobacillary rods.

  • Widely distributed in vegetation, feces of healthy animals, sewage effluent, and fresh water
  • Infection caused by ingestion of contaminated food.

Rare cause of disease in dogs and cats. Septicemia and encephalitis are the main concerns. Abortion can also occur.

Empirical choices:

  • Amoxicillin/ampicillin
  • Tetracyclines
  • Trimethoprim sulfa
